Building Together: Slate Architecture's Commitment to Community Engagement
At Slate Architecture, we believe that the foundation of great architecture lies not just in the physical structures we create but in the communities, we help build and nurture. Our passion for innovative design is matched only by our commitment to giving back, a value deeply rooted in our collaborations with non-profit organizations. These partnerships reflect our core belief: architecture is a tool for social change, capable of transforming lives and communities for the better.
Crafting Spaces with a Purpose
Our journey with non-profit organizations is built on a mutual vision: to create spaces that serve, empower, and inspire. From community centers that become a hub for youth activities to affordable housing projects that offer a beacon of hope for families, our projects aim to address the unique needs of each community we serve. Slate Architecture takes pride in crafting not just buildings, but homes, sanctuaries, and centers of empowerment that reflect the spirit and needs of those who inhabit them.
Engaging Communities in the Design Process
We understand that true community engagement means involving those who will live, work, and play in the spaces we design. This is why our approach is deeply collaborative, ensuring that the voices of community members are not just heard but are integral to the design process. Through workshops, town halls, and direct dialogues, we gather insights and feedback that shape our projects, making them more inclusive, accessible, and reflective of the community's identity and aspirations.
A Testament to Partnership and Impact
One shining example of this collaborative spirit is evident in the construction of the Iowa West Foundation Collaboration Center, part of the Charles E. Lakin Human Services Campus. In this project, Slate Architecture and non-profits such as Family Inc., Iowa Legal Aid, and Together are brought together to create a 49,000-square-foot facility designed to enhance community services. The building will not only house these organizations but also feature conference rooms for broader community use, a teaching kitchen, and a rooftop garden, facilitating a more integrated approach to serving community needs. The involvement of various stakeholders, including the Lakin Campus Foundation and local philanthropists, in fundraising and planning underscores the collective commitment to a project that promises to be a cornerstone for local collaboration and service enhancement.
Sustainability and Social Responsibility
In every project we undertake, sustainability is a priority. We strive to create environmentally friendly designs that promote energy efficiency, reduce carbon footprints, and incorporate green spaces, contributing to the health and well-being of the community and the planet. Our commitment to sustainability reflects our broader responsibility to future generations, ensuring that the spaces we create today will serve and inspire them tomorrow.
Looking Forward: A Call to Collaborate
As we look to the future, Slate Architecture is excited to deepen existing partnerships and forge new ones with non-profit organizations. We are more committed than ever to leveraging our expertise in service of communities, believing in the power of architecture to catalyze positive change. We invite non-profits with a vision for a better world to join us. Together, we can create not just buildings, but legacies of empowerment, sustainability, and hope.
Our work with non-profit organizations is more than just a service—it's a partnership for change. At Slate Architecture, we're not just building structures; we're building stronger, more vibrant communities. And this is only the beginning.

Dwayne and the Slate staff have taken the time to learn the ins and outs of our work as they helped us design new spaces. Dwayne even helped us navigate the city bureaucracy when our new greenhouses were built saving us thousands of dollars and weeks of construction time. They understand nonprofits and have been great partners.
Working with Slate was very beneficial for our small non-profit. They were understanding of our financial restrictions and Jeremy was very quick to respond and work as a team with our contractor to keep the project moving forward and within budget. We enjoyed working with them and love our new office!
The Slate team has been fantastic to work with. Feel very fortunate to have such a great partner guiding us through the process and designing two new facilities to support our customers and employees.
